The Inside Line Helps Junior Golf Squads Step Up a Gear

Fifty elite players from South Lanarkshire Council's Junior Golf Development Squads were given an introduction into sports psychology and performance preparation last night (Thursday, May 22).

The training session delivered by The Inside Line was aimed at helping the youngsters understand the level of commitment and dedication needed to successfully compete in the 2011 International Children's Games should they be selected to represent their region at the event.

Lanarkshire is to host the Children's Games following a joint bid by North and South Lanarkshire Councils to bring the world’s biggest youth sporting event to Scotland for the first time.

Up to 1,500 competitors aged 12 to 15, along with coaches, administrators and delegates from more than 70 countries will head to Lanarkshire for the International Olympic Committee-recognised event in August 2011.

Colin Girvan, Golf Development Officer for South Lanarkshire Council drafted in The Inside Line to provide an insight for the age-group golf squads into the role psychology, hydration, nutrition, the media and public relations plays in the career of a top level sports competitor.

As the youngsters progress through the Council's golf coaching programme throughout the year, and vie for selection in the final squads to compete at the 2011 Children's Games, additional tailored coaching will be provided to ensure they are given the best possible chance of securing medal positions against international opposition.

Willie Paterson, Chairman of The Inside Line, said:
"We fully appreciate the opportunity these youngsters have been given to represent their region on a worldwide stage and felt we could assist them by giving them an insight into our experience of what is required in terms of preparation to succeed at the top level of sport.   Hopefully they were all able to take something away from last night's session that will help them to really improve their golf as they look to make it into the final selection for the Children's Games and potentially at making a long-term career in the game."
