Fastest Female Nominated for Sports Award
TIL client Carol Brown (21) has been nominated for a prestigious sports award after her outstanding championship-winning season.
The Falkirk-based flyer became the first woman in Scotland – and possibly the UK – to win a major motorsport title when she clinched the SMRC Legends Cars Championship at Knockhill, Fife, in September.
In recognition of her superb achievement Carol has been shortlisted in the Best Amateur category at the Scottish Sports Awards 2008. She will vie for the award with shinty legend Ronald Ross and rising golf star Callum Macaulay.
TV's face of motorsport Suzi Perry will host the glamorous bash at Glasgow's Hilton Hotel on December 4, which will celebrate excellence in Scotland’s sportsmen, women and teams for their outstanding achievements across the sporting spectrum.
An incredible array of talent from the greats to the grassroots and representing 15 different sports will contest the nine awards categories. Global Scottish stars such as Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy, Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson and tennis ace Andy Murray have been nominated for Personality of the Year.
Having proved she is more than a match for the boys by winning the Legends series, Carol is now hoping to add the Scottish Sports Award to her trophy cabinet and secure the financial backing to move towards her goal of competing professionally in the British Touring Car Championship.
Prior to her appearance at the Scottish Sports Awards, Carol will be in action at the Radio Clyde Cash for Kids Grand Prix on Monday (December 1).
She will be joined for the Le-Mans style kart race by British Touring Car ace Michael Doyle and Glasgow airport hero John Smeaton as they help to raise money for a great cause at the popular charity event.
Carol Brown said:
“I’m absolutely delighted to have been nominated for such a prestigious award. It was a real surprise too because I had no idea my name was in the frame until I was called by the organisers and told I had made it onto the shortlist. I have to say a big thank you to my brother-in-law Scott Currie for putting my name forward in the first place. I’m not sure what my chances are against the other nominees because our sports are so different, but it’s just great to be up against people of such a high calibre. I’m proud of being the first woman to win a major race series in Scotland, and to win an award like this would be the icing on the cake after such a fantastic year. Hopefully, this sort of recognition will help me to attract sponsors who want to be associated with success and allow me to go on and compete at an even higher level in 2009.”
John Smeaton said: "Cash For The kids is a great charitable institution and it’s a real honour to take part. It helps the kids who really need it especially at this time of year."
