Cumbrian Company Passes with Flying Colours

A Carlisle-based training company has smashed the national pass rate for training drivers of Large Goods Vehicles.

System Training delivers Large Goods Vehicle training courses  (LGV course) to some of the UK’s biggest firms involved in transport, including supermarket giants such as Tesco and ASDA.

The latest figures released by the Driving Schools Booking Service have shown that System Training had a significantly higher pass rate than the national average, and also surpassed the pass rate for the county of Cumbria.

The nationwide pass rate for LGV course licence test takers across 2008/09 is 48.39%, while the success rate for those in Cumbria is 51.36%.

System Training’s records show that in August, 70% of candidates sitting tests after taking its LGV course attained the qualification.

The company, part of Logistics Academy North West, has attributed its success to its robust quality procedures, strong academic background and desire to deliver a higher standard of training than is required to simply pass the test.

Among the firm’s blue-chip clients across the UK is the legendary Stobart logistics group.  The famous haulage company’s audio visual manager Ian Howe has praised the way System Training helped improve the service offered by Stobart.

“When I started working for Eddie Stobart I was employed to manage the company’s giant mobile LED screen.  I always had to get an extra driver to bring the truck to events, even ones as close as Carlisle United FC, so it was a lot more hassle and a lot more cost,” he explained.

“The company decided to put me through my Class C HGV test, and I went to System Training for a week long course.  It was quite an intense week and much more thorough than I imagined it might be but I passed first time with flying colours.  We covered so much, especially how to make best use of the truck in terms of using the mirrors, gearbox and engine to drive safely and efficiently. 

“Now the company is in a much better position to outsource the screen and the whole procedure is much more cost effective as it just takes one person to cover everything.  People will have seen it at CUFC matches, motor rallies, Carlisle Live and we have covered quite a few outdoor events and concerts this year.”

System Training are now looking to roll out a specially-discounted LGV licence course in order to help other companies create similar efficiencies in terms of staff availability and equipment running costs.
